Ahluwalia questions the concept of ‘home’ in poignant London Fashion Week show

Ahluwalia questions the concept of ‘home’ in poignant London Fashion Week show

Ahluwalia's Runway Showcase: A Tapestry of Cultural Influences

Priya Ahluwalia's latest runway show seamlessly blended the comforts of British living with the rich tapestry of her Indian and Nigerian heritage, creating a captivating collection that celebrated the concept of "Home Sweet Home."

Weaving a Sustainable Narrative through Patchwork and Deadstock

Priya Ahluwalia, an independent designer known for her innovative patchwork techniques, has once again captivated the fashion world with her spring/summer 2025 collection. Transforming deadstock denim into fresh, sustainable fashion, Ahluwalia's mission has been centered on championing environmental responsibility, a commitment that has earned her the prestigious Leader of Change award at the Fashion Awards for three consecutive years.

Embracing Dual Roots and Upbringing

The collection, titled "Home Sweet Home," was inspired by Ahluwalia's recent trip to Jamaica over the Christmas holidays. For the designer, the concept of home encompasses both physical and emotional dimensions, drawing inspiration from her Nigerian-Indian roots and her upbringing in England. Through a vibrant palette of burnt umbers, greens, and ultramarine blues, Ahluwalia masterfully wove together the eclectic colors of her dual heritage, seamlessly incorporating elements of her British upbringing.

Sentimental Storytelling through Motifs and Fabrics

Ahluwalia's collection was imbued with a deep sense of sentimentality, as evidenced by the personal references and motifs that permeated the designs. A leaf motif, inspired by the wallpaper in her grandparents' first English home, was printed onto knee-high boots and skintight dresses, while patterns taken from the rugs in her childhood home were emblazoned onto various pieces throughout the collection.Beyond these literal references, Ahluwalia also incorporated more conceptual homely motifs, such as deconstructed and contorted fabrics. In two of the women's dresses, the fabric was stretched, pulled, and tied in knots, a symbolic representation of her grandmother's emotional connection to her home in India, despite her long-term residence in the UK.

Elevating Eveningwear with Beaded Glamour

Ahluwalia's collection also saw the introduction of some glamorous evening ensembles, a departure from her previous offerings. These garments were adorned with beaded vests and matching wigs constructed entirely from chunky, multicolored beads, which rustled noisily as the models took to the runway. According to design intern Arielle Uno Ekwang, the beaded elements were a nod to the common presence of beaded curtains in Nigerian homes, seamlessly blending Ahluwalia's cultural influences into the design.

Runway Adornments and Collaborations

The runway itself was adorned with several kilim rugs, which some models found challenging to navigate, further emphasizing the collection's homely and layered narrative. Ahluwalia also collaborated with the Danish jewelry brand, Pandora, incorporating jewels and beads that scattered the runway, complementing the embellished ensembles.

A Familiar Face on the Runway

The show's star-studded lineup included familiar faces, such as model Leomie Anderson, Bridgerton star Charithra Chandran, and musician Ghetts, all of whom have worn Ahluwalia's designs in the past. This season, British rapper Wretch 32 made a surprise appearance, walking the runway in a sharply tailored contrast suit coat and trousers.

Makeup Inspired by Ahluwalia's Roots

The makeup looks for the show were also inspired by Ahluwalia's Nigerian and Indian heritage. According to MAC's key makeup artist, Mata Marielle, the goal was to capture the essence of the people who live in Ahluwalia's home countries, creating a "sun-kissed" look with dewy skin, warm-outlined lips, and generous applications of bronzer and blush to imbue a homely warmth.Priya Ahluwalia's latest runway showcase has once again demonstrated her ability to seamlessly blend her diverse cultural influences, creating a collection that is both deeply personal and universally captivating. Through her innovative use of materials, thoughtful design details, and a keen eye for storytelling, Ahluwalia has solidified her position as a leading voice in the sustainable fashion movement, inspiring audiences with her unique and authentic vision.
