For decades, A.I.O. Food Market in Rockland, Maine has been an integral part of the Knox County community. It initially faced a significant limitation - reaching those in need was a challenge as one had to find a way to get to the food. However, on Friday, everything changed.Transformative Changes at A.I.O. Food Market
The Significance of the New Van
Executive Director Alan Kearn emphasizes the importance of the van. "The van is not just about getting more food; it's about distributing it more effectively. It opens up new avenues for us to serve the community." With the help of partners, sponsors, and donors, A.I.O. can now provide a free grocery store-like experience to those in need. This new addition comes at a crucial time. While the service has a low bar in terms of not income-qualifying people, there is a high bar - people have to physically come to the market or send someone. Many in the community couldn't make it, but the van will change that.
Expanding Meal Programs with the Van
In addition to the at-home delivery starting in the New Year, the new van will allow A.I.O. to expand their weekend-meal program. It will now include elementary, middle, and high school kids. This expansion is a significant step in ensuring that more children have access to nutritious meals.Volunteer Mimi Moore, who has been with A.I.O. for decades, recalls the humble beginnings. "We started very small, just a group bouncing around from church to church. Never did we think it would grow into this great big market."
The Role of Donations and Volunteers
According to staff, donations and volunteers are the backbone of A.I.O.'s success. Volunteer Elane Sprague explains, "There's a big need in the community, and we feel compelled to help. Donations and our volunteers make it all possible."The at-home delivery system works as an online ordering platform. Those at home can select from the market inventory, and volunteers will pack and deliver it. This ensures that even those who can't make it to the market can still access the food they need.A.I.O. Food Market's journey from a small group to a major community resource is a testament to the power of community support and innovation. With the new van and expanded programs, they are poised to make an even greater impact in the years to come.Copyright 2024 WABI. All rights reserved.
